Fast-food chain Burger King has launched its own cryptocurrency in Russia called WhopperCoin, as a loyalty card style reward.

Moscow-based startup Waves Platform has helped launched the currency. Burger fans can earn one WhopperCoin for every rouble (0.01p) they spend when they eat at Burger King. It has already issued one billion of the virtual tokens, and 1,700 WhopperCoins gets you an actual Whopper burger in real life. Burger King Russia is planning on releasing an app through which the currency can be traded.

‘Now Whopper is not only burger that people in 90 different countries love – it’s an investment tool as well. According to the forecasts, cryptocurrency will increase exponentially in value. Eating Whoppers now is a strategy for financial prosperity tomorrow,’ said Ivan Shestov, Head of External Communications at Burger King Russia.

‘We are glad that Burger King Russia has chosen Waves as a platform for its loyalty program launch and WhopperCoin distribution. We are sure that this decision will promote blockchain technology in Russia and will enable the promotion of its benefits and possibilities for a wide audience,’ adds Max Pertsovskiy, CBDO of Waves Platform.
